now back from vacation. more specifically about the former nebraska law maker chuck hagel and the reports he will be picked as early as tomorrow as the secretary of defense choice to replace leon panetta by the president. the white house has been mum, said nothing more specifically about that. there have been a lot of rumblings about this. it would be a contentious nomination battle, as we noted on the sunday morning shows, for a variety of reasons. for one, we heard from senator lindsey graham of south carolina today, who said, among other things, that chuck hagel was, quote, out of the mainstream on foreign policy issues and said, in reference to the potential that he would be picked, for the president it would be what he called an in your face selection, saying that it was just more -- a greater effort to get sort of up against the republicans and to continue the battle lines as they have already been drawn. that goes specifically, lindsey graham's concerns, to some past comments that chuck hagel had made about israel. he referred to the jewish lobby that offended some
, and i did recommending both hagel and carey. >> joy: okay. so who else? did you talk about lou? >> no i was talking about cheryl sanburg. >> jennifer: all right. what about chief of staff? >> i was thinking shean donovan and then there would be a new hud secretary -- >> but he is not leaving. >> yes, there are some wonderful public service opportunities in los angeles that hilda solis is taking a look at. many people have encouraged her to take a look at running for office. >> jennifer: he has gotten some criticism for appointing all white males so far. but he is going to appoint some women. >> that's right. >> jennifer: we're going to come back and talk about another really important subject. so come back and we have some other stories to cover, because there are some developments in the war on women, but after the break we have got to talk about what is happening in congress in the right on right fight. poor john boehner meet poor mitch mcconnell, the club for republican leaders in need of a hug appears to have added a member. we'll be right back. jennifer granholm
the best in chuck hagel, john brennan, and senator kerry and that as the president looks to fill these other positions, finding the best is what will guide him. wolf? >> the president also has an important visit with the afghan president hamid karzai. what do they hope to accomplish? >> reporter: that's right, wolf. they will have a bilateral meeting. you can already see the flag of afghanistan flying over the blair house. that is where he will be staying while here in washington. we're told by white house aides that they will be talking about security, political and the economic transition. that, of course, is very key as the u.s. looks to 2014 to withdrawing from afghanistan. they will be talking about what the u.s. footprint will look like in afghanistan after 2014. they will have their bilateral meeting and also a working lunch and then a joint press conference, wolf. >> we'll be watching that. thanks very much, dan lothian. >>> all right. this just coming in to "the situation room." new photos of a retired fbi agent who's been missing since 2007. robert levin son's family re
and republicans like chuck hagel? meanwhile some republicans are up with the hagel pick because of his possible antigay views. the democrats are filling in with the old white guys and the republicans are helping the the gays. i can't wait to see what the daily show is going to do with that story. there's no time. there's too much. dam damn you mayans. why couldn't the world have ended when you said it was going to end because that's what i was planning on. now i've got three trillion cans of creamed corn in my basement. waaa! we're going to get to all that in the next week or two because after that we have a two-month midwinter hiatus. but we have to start somewhere. here we go. our top story tonight, world renown thes pee and gerard depardieu has decided to depart france. (mumbling) we begin where we left off: dangling tenuously on the precipice of the fiscal cliff. could president barack obama pull america back from the chasm? would house speaker boehner's doomsday machine be stopped in time? who really fathered nancy pelosi's love child? i'm going with eccentric billionaire lucius trent. you
secretary chuck hagel one of a number of cabinet nominations the senate will take up including treasury and defense secretary and secretary of state. we heard treasury geithner will leave his position by the end of this month. the debate has renewed on sunday morning and around the country on gun violence. we want to ask you just what are the solutions? it is an issue the president says will be a top priority in the year ahead. our gone lines are open with the numbers on the screen. you can send us an e-mail at journal at c-span.org. or facebook.com/c-span or cspanwj. another shooting that took place in aurora, colorado, a town hit by the mass shooting at a movie theatre. this from a barricaded gunman and three people found dead in aurora after police exchanged gunfire with the gunman that took place yesterday. a woman earlier in the day escaped uninjured from the home saying she saw three lifeless bodies inside and said the man was firing shots at the residents before 3:00 in the morni morning. during a subsequent standoff the gunman behaved irrationally, ignored commands to exit the p
and expend all their ammunition, if they have much, probably on chuck hagel. they may try to take them both out, but it seems to me, you can't litigate every single nominee that the president, who was just reelected, sends down to the hill. they are going to have 55 votes in the senate. it doesn't seem to me jack lew is going to be the one that they really make a fuss over, but we'll see what comes out over the next 48 hours and what they are saying once it's official, what sort of vibe and signals we get from the senate. >> jack lew and vibes. i want to open this up to our panel here. jen, you know, to some degree, the bluster from the republican party is now par for the course on basically everything. if the president announced he was going to have a tuna fish sandwich for lunch, i'm sure there would be outcry it wasn't chicken salad. >> if lindsey graham was nominated, i'm not sure he'd vote for himself at this point. it's become this big trend, that's unfortunate. take a step back, it is delaying the process to getting important nominees in place, and whether you're a democrat or republ
with president obama like chuck hagel and jack lew and republicans delayed 85% of the planned relief funding for hurricane sandy. that, of course, drew a strong rebuke from republican governor chris christie. this is not politics devoted to a competing vision. this is politics devoted to digs corruption and obstruction, and those recent fights i mentioned don't even include the explosion of minority obstruction in the u.s. senate. the filibuster has been used against more of obama's legislation than any president in history. the bottom line is that the gop is exploiting what i think is a hole in our democracy. can you lose elections and still get your way now if you don't care about responsibly governing. of course, it's hard to get voters to notice this kind of thing, but i believe obama has a big opportunity at the inauguration. he can call for more than just broad patriotism or vague unity. he can call out the amorality of a political party that would rather threaten man made crises than actually gonchings avern, advocate for cooperation. i think it's worth a try >> the majority of republ
